Passport: A passport is required to enter Guatemala.

Visa: Check the requirements at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala. Some travelers do not need a visa; others should consult the Guatemalan embassy in their country, and some must process a visa before entering.

Additional taxes: The Flores–Guatemala City flight has a US$3.00 per-person exit tax. At the Guatemala–Copán border the charge is Q10.00 per person, and from Copán to Guatemala it is US$3.00 per person.

Local currency: Guatemala uses Quetzales: Q1, Q5, Q10, Q20, Q50, Q100 and Q200. US dollars are widely accepted, as are most credit cards. We recommend dollars or credit cards for meals and Quetzales for shopping in markets.

Where can I exchange money? Banks usually offer the best exchange rate. You can also exchange money at your hotel or use ATMs. The reference rate is approximately US$1.00 for Q7.40–Q8.00.

Suggested tips:

  • Restaurants: 10% for service; some restaurants already include it.
  • Bellboys and housekeeping: US$1.00–US$2.00.
  • Guides: US$5.00–US$8.00 per person.

Children: A child is considered 3–11 years old, except for the Tikal tour, where the child range is 3–8 years.

Guides: Our local guides are selected for their experience, knowledge and professionalism. They are committed to making your trip unforgettable.

Languages: Tours are available in Spanish and English. Italian, German, French and Portuguese are available for an additional charge.

Medical conditions and insurance: Contact reservations@guatemalanadventure.com to discuss your condition. Our collective liability insurance covers injuries resulting from traffic events while the passenger is specifically inside the vehicle.

How to pay: Tours can be paid online by credit card through our payment system or by PayPal. For a deposit or bank transfer, contact reservations@guatemalanadventure.com.

How far in advance should I book? Day tours require at least 24 hours’ notice. Package reservations require at least 72 hours, subject to availability. We recommend booking in advance.

Changes and cancellations: For local flights, the penalty is US$30 three or more days before the flight and US$100 one day or less before. Except for Tikal tours, cancellations more than 30 days before the trip are charged for expenses; 29–15 days receive a 50% refund; 14–10 days receive a 25% refund; and 9–0 days are non-refundable.

For tour changes, contact reservations@guatemalanadventure.com because hotel availability and policies apply.

Confirmation: Booking confirmation is sent immediately by email, except Tikal tours, which are confirmed no later than 12 hours after purchase. If it does not arrive within 24 hours, email us so we can follow up.

Flights to Tikal: Tickets are sent to your email or directly to your hotel. A printed ticket is not required; tickets are also accepted on a mobile device.

Airport arrival times: For international flights, arrive at least two hours before departure at La Aurora International Airport. For local flights, arrive one and a half hours before departure.

Special diets: Email reservations@guatemalanadventure.com with the type of food required for your diet.

What to bring: Light cotton clothing, comfortable shoes, a waterproof jacket, swimwear and hiking shoes.

Meals: Breakfast is included at all hotels when booked with us. Lunch is included on Tikal and Yaxha tours. One-day tours do not include meals.

Drivers and transfers: Drivers speak Spanish and basic English. Request an English-speaking guide when booking; an additional charge may apply. Coordinate hotel transfers by email. Pickups at private homes are available in zones 1, 9, 10, 13, 14 and 15. For Tikal tours, pickup is approximately 4:30–4:45 am from Guatemala City or 3:45–4:00 am from Antigua Guatemala.
